The AI on the Newest iPhones

Apple and AI are coming together in your pocket.

On September 12, Wired Magazine released a piece detailing how the newest iPhones run on chips called neural engines. If you’ve read any of our previous pieces on neural networks and their importance, then you might find yourself wondering right now: is that what a neural engine is? Are you telling me that my next iPhone will effectively have a tiny AI inside of it?

In short, the answer is yes. More specifically, the situation is a bit more complicated.

The facts include that the new chips will use AI algorithms in order to essentially be more self-aware. In explaining exactly what this means, Apple reportedly mentioned that the average iPhone user will find that his or her phone has better camera effects than ever before as well as more Augmented Reality experiences than ever before. If you don’t already know, by Augmented Reality experiences, we mean those that let us interact with details or even characters that do not really exist in a way that makes them have a sort of semi-existence.

While this might be a semi-confusing explanation, thinking about Pokemon Go could help you to understand this. Pokemon Go is, by definition, an augmented reality experience. In it, players see reality, with virtual Pokemon imposed upon it.

Given this, it seems clear that the new iPhones plan to heavily support some of these experiences, as well as provide a significant amount of their own. As time rolls on and the new models become even more widely adopted, expect us to roll out more posts on how their tech is truly playing out in practice.
