Daneel.io+Watson: The Difficulty of AI Based Recommendations

It bills itself as “the most powerful A.I. in cryptocurrency at your service.” What this really means may be difficult to understand at first. Upon first glance at Daneel.io’s website, it becomes clear that they are trying to offer an AI that can act as your virtual Crypto investing assistant in specific ways.

What immediately seems to work in their favor is that their project is underpinned by IBM’s Watson AI system, which is perhaps the most well-known example of an open source AI project. The Daneel team claims that this technology enables their main product to understand you and interact with you, keep you informed in real-time with quality and reliable information, and identify and capture the different emotions of the market. In trying to decipher what all of this means in terms of the project’s utility, it is reasonable to begin with Watson’s limitations. Just a few weeks ago, in July, Watson was accused of giving “unsafe recommendations” related to working with cancer treatments at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In the very least, these failed recommendations were reportedly not given to real patients. According to a report by The Verge, they were merely based on “hypothetical” conditions, which were fed to the AI by some of the hospital’s doctors.

The main criticism of Watson, related to this instance, seemed to be that there was no proof that it had the ability to provide any sort of novel recommendations based on real patient data. Apparently, all of its experience in the health care space has been with hypotheticals like those mentioned above. This also can be said to mean that these doctors implanted their bias into the system, related to what treatments are best, when they gave Watson certain data on treatments that it could choose. Secondly, this means that Watson has not yet proven any ability to make the jobs of doctors more efficient, because up to now, it has depended on their data and therefore also experience, to do its work.

Because of all of this, Daneel has invariably inherited the same level of skepticism. As time goes on, only its tested experience on the market will determine whether it will be able to do everything that it promises that it will be able to do. At this time, it is hard to predict whether it has any of the abilities that it claims to have, without actively testing its AI system. Despite the fact that this is true, in our next post on the subject, we will look into updates on the project as they occur.
